USMEF Mystery Shopper Winners Visit U.S. Meat Industry
Winners of a six-month-long USMEF Mystery Shopper program helping improve retail meat department standards in Mexico are visiting Iowa and Colorado this week. During this trip they will gain an understanding of beef and pork processing methods, meat marketing in retail stores and meat preparation in restaurants.
The group of winning meat department butchers, supervisors and staff are led by USMEF Mexico Retail Manager Gustavo Castano and Marketing Manager Gerardo Rodriguez. The visit started at a U.S. packing plant to see how U.S. beef and pork is produced.
“This trip is a wonderful experience for the Mystery Shopper winners to see the places and methods involved in producing U.S. meat,” Rodriguez said. “The group is experiencing how meat is produced and marketed successfully in the United States and will take home new ideas to use in their store to better market U.S. meat.”
Other activities, such as attending the Living History Farm in Iowa, visiting a variety of supermarket stores and taking a culinary tour of the areas, rewarded the group for winning the program.
In its fifth year, the USMEF Mystery Shopper program creates a friendly competition between participating retail stores with the aim of improving meat counter service standards.
“Mystery shoppers,” people who look and act like regular customers, rate meat departments on a variety of attributes, including sanitation, display, customer service and U.S. meat promotion.
