USMEF Draws Interest To U.S. Meat Products At Large Expo

U.S. meat samples from cooking and information seminars conducted by award-winning chefs drew buyers to the USMEF pavilion at Abastur, the largest hotel and restaurant exposition in Mexico.

USMEF shared its pavilion with two member companies and had a constant flow of interested visitors during the three-day expo taking place Oct. 4-6 in Mexico City . Many visitors were already aware of some U.S. pork and beef products, and USMEF used the opportunity to show them other U.S. meat products and discuss their uses.

USMEF Chef Contest winners talked about successfully using U.S. pork and beef cuts in their restaurants and demonstrated how to cut and prepare these items. Visitors tasted the dishes and were able to ask questions and gain additional information.

“Participation in events like Abastur contributes to the growing demand for U.S. red meat products in Mexico,” said Chad Russell, USMEF director of the Mexico and Dominican Republic regions.

Mexico is the largest export market for U.S. pork and beef. U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to Mexico through June increased 20 percent in volume to 217,795 metric tons (mt) and 17 percent in value to $323 million compared to the same period last year.

During the same time period, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports to Mexico increased 34 percent in volume to 207,353 mt and 37 percent in value to $664.4 million.

Abastur features the most important food and hotel companies in Mexico, such as Toks and Wings restaurants in addition to Fiesta Americana and Fiesta Inn hotels. The annual expo, celebrating its 21st year, typically draws more than 20,000 visitors and 450 exhibitors.
