U.S. Red Meat Important In Healthful Diet, USMEF Says At Diabetes Seminar

Lean cuts of U.S. pork and beef are an important part of a healthy diet meant to control diabetes and obesity, a USMEF nutritionist told children a

nd parents at a seminar last week in Veracruz. The seminar was held during the Platicame National Campaign, designed to help fight diabetes and obesity in children.

Children had their blood sugar, cholesterol and fat levels checked before visiting with USMEF Roy’s Club characters Roy, Alberto and Sam. At the USMEF booth, parents received U.S. meat nutrition information and could enroll their children in Roy’s Club, which introduces children to the importance of eating a balanced meal with red meat as a key ingredient. As club members, kids can earn prizes and learn more about keeping healthy with proper nutrition and exercise.

Lean cuts of U.S. meat help keep blood sugar levels within a safe range and are a good source of protein in a healthy diet designed to manage calories and fat intake to prevent obesity and high cholesterol, which can lead to diabetes complications.

For example, U.S. pork tenderloin contains 139 calories and 1.4 grams of saturated fat per 3-ounce serving, which compares favorably to chicken breast and is much less than chicken thigh meat.

USMEF Scores With U.S. Meat During Popular Soccer Tournament

USMEF provided a nutrition seminar and served U.S. pork and beef tacos to more than 1,200 fans last weekend in Mexico City at the Jetix Cup, an amateur soccer competition organized in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

A USMEF nutritionist told parents how U.S. pork and beef is a good part of a well-balanced diet for body and brain development of children. U.S. meat helps develop the strength children need to participate in sports.

While children played games to learn what a well-balance diet looks like, USMEF provided parents with recipe cards and information on nutrition and where to purchase U.S. meat.

After soccer matches played in Mexico City , Guadalajara and Monterrey, the Jetix Cup final takes place in Mexico City May 7.
