New Labeling Requirements Posted On FSIS Web Site

As we reported earlier, Mexico has enacted new Spanish language labeling requirements which came into force on October 6. The Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) understands the Mexican inspectors are being flexible now, despite the fact that theoretically the new requirements are already in force. Exporters need to put the newly required information on their products as soon as possible.

After consultations between U.S. and Mexican representatives, the changes have been clarified and have been posted online in the FSIS Library of Export Requirements (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/OFO/export/explib.htm).

USMEF would like to particularly draw members’ attention to the following:

  • The consignee on the label must be same as Name and City entered on FSIS Form 9060-5; the street address is not required.
  • Note: “Destination of Product” and “Establishment number on boxes” are required. Completion of the consignee block on the FSIS Form 9060-5 fulfills the “Destination of  product” requirement and  “Establishment number on boxes” need not be included in the “Remarks” section as it is already provided in the EST/PLANT NUMBER ON BOXES column.

Members with questions can contact Paul Clayton (pclayton@usmef.org) or Ann Spaeth (aspaeth@usmef.org) in USMEF’s Denver headquarters (303) 623-6328).
