New Animal Health Law Published

The new Animal Health Law was published June 12 in the Mexican Government’s Daily Register and it is to be fully implemented in 120 days. Current rules and regulations stay in effect until then. Investors now have 120 days to build verification points on the Mexican side of the border, at which time all import verification points on the U.S. side of the border will no longer be authorized to inspect meat, poultry or animal byproducts for import into Mexico. There are currently 18 authorized import verification points operating in the United States at nine different points of entry along the border, but there is only one authorized import verification point on the Mexican side of the border. It will be up to SAGARPA to determine the new procedures and how these will be implemented. USMEF – in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy, USAPEEC and the trade – will work with SAGARPA officials on structuring and editing these procedures. If members have questions or suggestions, now is the time to make them known to the Mexico City office. Contact Gilberto Lozano USMEF-Mexico at glozano@usmef.org.mx
