Mexico Bans Poultry From Avian Influenza-Affected States

Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) told USDA-Mexico City yesterday that it will ban poultry imports from states that have reported cases of avian influenza.

SAGARPA said that poultry shipments that transit affected states could enter Mexico, as long as the product is transported in containers sealed at the plant of origin. Shipments already en route will likely encounter problems at the border because of the policy, according to the U.S. Embassy.

SAGARPA’s action is seen by the U.S. poultry industry as a reaction to pressure from Mexican poultry producers.
