Mexican Government Subsidizes Hogs At TIF Plants

USMEF has learned that the Mexican Government will, effective Oct. 1, pay a support payment of 50 pesos per hog to producers in the State of Sonora and 100 pesos per hog to producers in the other states of Mexico. This is for hogs 5 to 6 months of age between 198 and 264 pounds killed at Tipo Inspection Federal (TIF) plants.  The 100 peso subsidy translates to about 1 peso ($0.1006) per kilo, or $4.94 per hundred weight.  USMEF is assessing the impact of a roughly five cents per pound subsidy on U.S. pork exports to Mexico.

USMEF does not know how long the Mexican government will pay this subsidy or if it will be in future tied to a particular hog price floor.  Many Mexican hogs are slaughtered at non-TIF state and municipal facilities and their owners will not receive the subsidy.
