Mexico Announces Plant Suspensions

In a letter to the USDA dated Dec. 22, 2008, the Mexican agriculture ministry officially suspended 39 U.S. pork and beef facilities from exporting to Mexico. While USMEF has not received confirmation of the specific cutoff date, we are advising exporters that products certified for export by Dec. 22 or earlier will remain eligible. Products certified after Dec. 22 will not be allowed entry into Mexico.

Many establishments on this list have already submitted corrective actions through the FSIS district offices. USMEF advises all establishments that have not submitted corrective actions to do so as soon as possible. Mexican officials indicated that they plan to review the corrective actions that have been submitted, and that this review will create an opportunity for relisting for export.

While the Mexican government is on holiday until Jan. 7, USDA is pressing Mexican officials to engage on this issue prior to this date.

USMEF will provide additional information as it becomes available.
