Mexican Media Team Hears Message On U.S. Pork

USMEF Director, Mexico Gilberto Lozano organized a media team including camera crew and print and electronic reporters to Iowa’s pork country and to the World Pork Congress in Washington, DC. recently.

Tour highlights chosen to spread the message of the nutritional quality of U.S. pork included:

•    A specialized seminar on U.S. pork production, its nutrition composition and the workings of HACCP, at Iowa State University (ISU);

•     A visit to the ISU meat lab and to local supermarkets’ meat departments to see how food safety works at the retail level; and

•     A tour of the Christensen family farm where the team saw the Pork Quality Assurance program in action in the handling of pigs from birth to table.

Lozano then led the team to Washington, D.C. and the World Pork Congress, where USDA Secretary Mike Johanns spoke about the upcoming release of a study on the pig genome and the tremendous impact it will have both on treating human illnesses and industry understanding of hogs.

The team learned that soon-to-be-released data proves that pork has less fat than chicken, iron found in pork may prevent cancer in humans, and preliminary research suggests pork is beneficial for the development of children’s brains.

The team visit ended with meetings with officials of USDA’s Food Safety And Inspection Service (FSIS), who assured them of the eradication of many porcine illnesses and reiterated that the U.S. pork that crosses the border meets the highest inspection criteria and Mexican consumers eat the same pork as their neighbors to the north.
