Mexican Authorities Delay New Chilled Combo Procedures Until April 20
On Feb. 13, 2009, SAGARPA/SENASICA’s General Director of Phyto-zoosanitary Inspection issued an official notification with instruction to all the Inspection Offices (border OISAS) stating their new combo inspection and sampling procedures for inspection and sampling of chilled products packed in combos be postponed until April 20, 2009 (previously Feb. 16, 2009) “to avoid any setbacks in the importation of this kind of product at the points of entry.”
The prohibition of packaging frozen products in combo bins remains in place.
New Fees Starting Today at Ports LA and Long Beach
The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will begin collecting $70/FEU ($35/TEU) today (Wednesday, Feb. 18) to pay for their clean trucks program. Details on how PortCheck fee collection will work can be found on the AgTC website (www.agtrans.org) under the "Issues" tab.
The Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) reports that the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has decided not to block terminal operators at the ports from setting up the fee-collection process through PortCheck. The FMC continues to seek an injunction in federal court against other parts of the clean air plan (the ban on owner-operators) as anticompetitive under the Shipping Act. The AgTC agrees with the FMC and supports its efforts, but the new container fees go into effect tomorrow nonetheless.
