Comment Period On Proposed Resumption Of Beef Imports From Uruguay Ends This Friday

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended until Friday, April 25, the comment period on a proposal to resume beef imports from Uruguay. USDA is considering all comments received by this Friday about the proposal to amend its regulations to allow the importation of fresh (chilled or frozen) beef from Uruguay. Under the proposed regulations, fresh beef from Uruguay would be allowed in the U.S. if several conditions are met, including (but not limited to): identification of the origin of the beef and ante- and post mortem veterinary inspections by an authorized veterinary official of Uruguay. These required conditions are intended to continue to protect American agriculture and livestock from any foreign animal disease while allowing some importation of beef from Uruguay.

Comments may be sent to USDA by postal mail, commercial delivery or email. For postal mail or commercial delivery of comments, send an original and three copies to:

Docket No. 02-109-1, Regulatory Analysis and Development, PPD, APHIS, Station 3C71, 4700 River Road, Unit 118, Riverdale, Md. 20737-1238.
