Market Access Update: China Adds Vermont to Suspension List; UAE, Ecuador Lift Bans on U.S. Pork
With the addition of Vermont, China has now suspended pork imports from 43 states and the District of Columbia.
While China has shown some signs of easing its restrictions, the proposed changes have not generated much optimism among trade officials or the industry. USMEF will continue to work with trade officials on the broader goal of addressing the entire import ban, and will report any developments as they occur.
Late last week, Illinois became the most recent addition to Russia’s list of states from which all uncooked meat products are ineligible. With the addition of Illinois, eight states are now impacted by Russia’s influenza-related trade suspensions. Arizona and Massachusetts are suspended for non-heat treated pork only, while California, Delaware, Illinois, New York, South Carolina and Texas are included for non heat-treated products regardless of species.
On a positive note, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ecuador have lifted their bans on all U.S. pork and pork products, effective May 7 and May 11 respectively. Ecuador’s move leaves St. Lucia as the only remaining ban on U.S. pork by a Western Hemisphere nation. A full summary of import suspensions and market access is available online.
