Lotte Mart Giving U.S. Beef Higher Profile

The second-largest big-box retail chain in South Korea, Lotte Mart partnered last week with USMEF and Certified Angus Beef (CAB) in a seminar for Lotte Mart meat department staff aimed at boosting U.S. beef sales.

“Lotte Mart is a leader in promoting U.S. beef, and this educational seminar is one more sign of its leadership,” said Jihae Yang, USMEF-Korea director.  “Lotte Mart sees U.S. beef as a key product to differentiate it from its competitors, and CAB is the right high-quality product to fit that image and help them drive sales.”

Thirty-seven Lotte Mart meat department managers met with USMEF and CAB staff March 10 for the half-day program at the Lotte Hotel Seoul.   USMEF staff provided an in-depth overview of the U.S. beef industry from pasture to plate, current export trends, the food-safety system, and USMEF programs and activities.

Lotte Mart’s corporate manager for imported meat merchandising, Ji-young Yoon, shared ideas for merchandising and marketing U.S. beef designed to increase the display space and boost sales.  In addition, she discussed alternative beef cuts to help meat department managers offer purchase options to customers, with a focus on CAB products.

“It is very timely that USMEF and CAB provided our meat staff with this important marketing seminar to help Lotte Mart drive sales of U.S. beef and differentiate ourselves from other big box retailers,” said Yoon.

Two representatives of CAB, Daisuke Shimojima and Geof Bednar, briefed the attendees on the CAB branded beef program while Hanjung Foods, a Korean importer of U.S. beef, sponsored a display of CAB products including bone-in and boneless short ribs, bone-in and boneless chuck short ribs, rib fingers and chuck eye roll.

The seminar was followed by a dinner reception featuring CAB Choice ribeye steak.
