Jordan Exempts Beef Imports From Customs Duty And Sales Tax

The Jordanian Council of Ministers decided on April 15, 2008, to exempt several food items, including beef, from custom duties and sales tax in order to curb rising food prices. The decree took effect immediately and the exemptions cover “fresh or chilled bovine, boneless cuts” and “frozen bovine, boneless cuts.” Ground meat and prepared meat items are not exempt.

The exemption, which the Jordanian trade speculates will be temporary, removes 5 percent to 7 percent duties on chilled and frozen U.S. beef products.
