Japanese Restaurant Chain Sets 1.5 Million Steak Target
A Japanese restaurant chain with more than 1,300 outlets is partnering with USMEF on a unique “too big for your plate” steak promotion with a goal of selling more than 1.5 million chuck eye roll steaks during a three-month promotion that kicked off Dec. 10.
Gust Restaurant, the largest Japanese restaurant chain with 1,307 outlets, is celebrating the strong purchasing power of the Japanese yen by promoting 7-ounce steaks for $11. The steaks are about 40 percent larger than the standard Japanese 5-ounce steak, and are being sold at the same price as the smaller steak.

“Sorry, this may be too big to eat, but try it,” is the theme of the campaign that will run through March 10, 2010.
USMEF is assisting on the promotion by providing publicity as well as some funding for menu production.
“This is a great opportunity for us to reach a large number of consumers and enable them to experience a great U.S. beef dining experience,” said Takemichi Yamashoji, USMEF-Japan senior marketing director. “Gust, a Skylark Group company, is the only restaurant chain in Japan with more than 1,000 outlets. It is an outstanding partner with USMEF on this promotion, which will help give U.S. beef sales an end-of-year boost and a quick start for 2010.”
