Japanese recipes created with U.S. pork are a hit among consumers and it seems many consumers have developed their own special recipes to create irresistible entrées. With this in mind, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) this spring created a U.S. pork recipe contest to give consumers the opportunity to share how they prepare everyday meals with U.S. pork.

More than 300 recipes were submitted by Japanese consumers eager to share their favorite U.S. pork recipes. The contest was publicized in print and online media news in an effort to reach as many interested consumers as possible.

From the hundreds of recipes submitted, 12 contestants and their original recipes were chosen for the final judging competition held last Sunday (June 11).

“This event was fun for participants, because it allowed them to be creative and let them share their own original recipes,” said Shinobu Shimada, USMEF Japan manager of consumer affairs, research and communication. “Promotions like this exhibit the confidence and love Japanese consumers have for U.S. pork.”

Three leading food experts served on the panel of judges and announced the winners of four different recipe categories.

“Powerful American Pork Rice Bowl” won the category of Health Life, while “Easy-style Tenderloin Salad with Homemade White Dressing” won the Happy Family category.

The special awards section of the recipe contest went to a dish called “Kimchi Sandwich with American Pork” and an additional dish called “Rice with Sesame Miso and Honey Pork” was also declared a winner.

Winners received 6 pounds of U.S. pork, other processed U.S. pork products and travel certificates as rewards for their creativity and devotion to cooking with U.S. pork.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, lamb, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
