Japan   USMEF Statement Regarding USDA Announcement On Procedures For Restoring U.S. Beef Exports To Japan

“The agreement announced today is an important first step toward restoring U.S. beef exports to Japan. The commitments made by both governments are fundamental to rebuilding the confidence of importers and consumers in Japan along with producers and exporters in the United States.

“We understand that Japanese officials wish to thoroughly review U.S. beef safety systems and protocols, and we are confident that they will find our practices meet or exceed their high standards.

“At the same time, it is critically important for Japan to recognize the U.S. food safety system and accept imports from all U.S. beef facilities approved by the USDA.

“As trade resumes, USMEF looks forward to working with our partners in Japan to rebuild confidence and renew relationships with the consumers and companies that have relied on and enjoyed our U.S. beef products for nearly 30 years.

“USMEF is working earnestly in Japan to restore precious consumer confidence and re-establish trust and relationships with the trade. USMEF is developing marketing campaigns based on the themes, ‘Just for Japan’ for the trade and ‘We Care’ for consumers to reinforce the special care and attention taken by the U.S. industry in producing beef specific to the expectations of consumers in Japan.

“The industry looks forward to supplying U.S. beef that meets the stringent criteria of Japanese and U.S. regulators. The U.S. government and industry have made many fundamental changes in their processes and procedures to ensure that U.S. beef is among the safest products in the world.

“To assure Japanese consumers and trade members U.S. beef is safe, USMEF is producing a Beef Virtual Tour showing the U.S. beef industry from farm to fork. To successfully market U.S. beef in Japan, USMEF identified an additional 17 U.S. beef cuts that could be sold profitably. USMEF conducted seminars explaining these opportunities in the United States and Japan with future seminars already planned in Japan.”
