USMEF Shares U.S. Pork Samples And U.S. Beef Information At FoodEx

USMEF is participating this week (March 14-17) in FoodEx 2006, Japan’s largest trade show expecting to draw more than 120,000 food industry buyers.

Visitors to the USMEF booth can get a taste of the new U.S. pork campaign featuring samples of ginger pork and cold shabu-shabu salad (shabu-shabu is thinly sliced beef usually cooked in a hot pot and served with vegetables usually dipping sauces).

The new U.S. pork retail campaign packaging also is on display to draw buyers’ attention to the campaign, which starts in April and features ten new U.S. pork dishes distributed to consumers through cable and local television programs and magazines.

Japan was the No. 1 market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat last year, experiencing a 13 percent increase in volume (to 353,928 metric tons) and an 11 percent increase in value (to $1.1 billion) over 2004.

Visitors interested in U.S. beef can view a virtual tour of the BSE prevention system in the United States, developed by USMEF to show each stage of the U.S. beef system, such as ranch and feedlot operations, processing, packaging and shipping.

Visitors can see firsthand how specified risk materials are removed at the packing plant and USMEF staff is there to answer questions or further explain the U.S. process.

A USMEF survey on Tuesday (March 14) of nearly 1,000 visitors showed more than 50 percent will purchase U.S. beef when it returns to Japan while 15 percent said they would not purchase U.S. beef.

Ten USMEF member companies are participating in the show at the USMEF booth.

Hong Kong

Beef Exporters Must Use New Certificates

USDA Hong Kong and USMEF would like to remind shippers of beef to Hong Kong that as of March 20, shipments presented for clearance in Hong Kong will be required to be accompanied by the new FSIS Hong Kong certificate (FSIS Form 9297-1) and the Letterhead Certificate for the Export of Beef and Beef Products to Hong Kong.

Shipments now on the water may still be accompanied by the original FSIS cert (FSIS Form 9060-5), but exporters must apply for an "In lieu" certificate in advance and have it sent to their importers so it may be presented to Hong Kong inspection officials when they clear shipments.
