USMEF Continues Strong U.S. Pork Consumer Push

Popular cooking magazines in Japan are helping USMEF spread the message of the benefits of U.S. pork. The magazines, including Lettuce Club, Orange Page, Nikkei Health, and Esse, introduced winter recipes featuring U.S. pork in December, and incorporated U.S. pork into other affiliated events they were conducting.

For example, a Lettuce Club promotion included cooking demonstrations at seven outlets of Seiyu in the Kanto area during the weekend of Dec. 2. The Orange Page promotion included recipe samplings at the magazine’s event at the Tokyo Kaikan Dec. 8, with 300 consumers attending. Ryori Okoku, one of Japan’s gourmet magazines, will feature the USMEF recipe book featuring U.S. pork in the near future.

Meanwhile, three U.S. pork recipes were featured in a weekend section of Asahi Newspaper.

Japan is the top export market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat in value, at more than $945 million from January through November 2006. This is down 6 percent from the same time period in 2005, but is still more than the second and third market (Mexico and Canada, respectively) values, combined.
