Top Japanese Retailers View U.S. Industry Systems

As part of its aisareru campaign, USMEF conducted a retail sales contest to honor chains that: sold the most U.S. beef in volume and value; increased the number of cuts purchased and offered for sale; and most appropriately used USMEF point-of-sale materials in their stores. The six winning teams have or soon will tour U.S. facilities to better understand our industry commitment to health and safety.

In the U.S. last week, the first team included representative of Fukuhara and Universe. Fukuhara, in Hokkaido, has 45 outlets and increased sales 38 percent. Universe, in North Tohoku, has 24 outlets and increased sales 20 percent. This week, the second team included Uny and U-Store representatives. Uny, located in Chubu, has 134 outlets and increased sales 23 percent. U-Store, in Chubu/Tokai, has 64 outlets and increased sales 11 percent. The third team next week will include representatives of Spark and Maruyoshi. Spark, in Chugoku, has 13 outlets and increased sales 9 percent. Maruyoshi, in Shikoku, has 40 outlets and increased sales 67 percent.

Managers making up the trade teams generally had much larger increases than the chains as a whole. The top manager honored, for example, recorded a 219 percent increase in volume and 226 percent increase in value during the promotion.
