Strong Interest In U.S. Meat Products At FoodEx Show

USMEF and 10 member companies report strong interest from food buyers and traders in Tokyo recently at FoodEx, the largest food trade show in Asia. More than 95,000 food industry traders could watch cutting demonstrations of U.S. beef and pork items, taste the products and then meet with USMEF member companies to discuss their products.

U.S. beef products were available for the first time in three years and new U.S. pork dishes, developed by USMEF with the help of a popular Japanese cooking instructor, were available for visitors to sample.

USMEF emphasized several underutilized U.S. beef cuts, including brisket, top blade and tri-tip along with popular items like boneless short ribs, chuck eye roll and strip loin.

“Interest in U.S. beef was very high and we emphasized the underutilized cuts as a way of increasing the supply of products available for Japan,” said USMEF Japan Director Greg Hanes. “Cutting and merchandising demonstrations for these underutilized items and tastings were well attended.”

USMEF also introduced its U.S. Beef Virtual Tour showing each stage of the U.S. beef industry, including a ranch operation, feedlot, processing and shipping to demonstrate the safety of U.S. beef. USMEF also develops virtual tours for other markets where beef safety is a concern.

In addition to the new U.S. pork dishes, USMEF promoted the Indy 300 event taking place April 21 in Tokyo. As an event sponsor, USMEF will promote processed U.S. pork products. Three USMEF members will provide samples at the Indy event.

Hanes noted strong interest from FoodEx visitors in processed U.S. pork items and upcoming U.S. pork spring promotions.
