Pork Safeguard To Trigger August 1 – Again

Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) today (July 29)announced that the government will implement the pork safeguard effective August 1 after accumulated tonnage of pork imports from all sources – at 316,755 metric tons (mt) for the first quarter of the fiscal year – had exceeded the trigger of 257,004 mt. As a result, the move will mean that the standard import price (the landed price after 4.3 percent tax is levied) will increase by nearly 25 percent from Y546.53/kg to Y681.08/kg. USMEF-Tokyo reports the industry has quietly accepted the announcement, as most users of imported pork anticipated the safeguard would be invoked for the fourth consecutive year.
