Pork Safeguard Will Be Imposed August 1

The Japanese Pork Safeguard will be imposed on August 1, 2003, and remain in force until the end of Japan's fiscal year, March 31, 2004. The triggering of the safeguard will increase the pork gate price 24.6 percent from 524 yen per kg to 653 yen per kg. The Japanese government will announce June import figures on July 28, and only 41,100 metric tons are necessary for the imposition of the safeguard.
