Poll Says Japan's Beef Demand Is Recovering

A poll by the Japanese newspaper, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, reported that the number of respondents who said they bought no beef has dropped to 7.3 percent from 31.3 percent in December.

The August survey, which polled 700 people in the Tokyo metro area, only 23.2% have cut down drastically on their beef purchases since Japan’s domestic BSE cases, compared with 31.3 in December.

The survey suggests that Japanese consumers still trust domestic beef more than imports. Only 7.6% said they mainly buy imports, compared with 26.1% in the earlier survey, and 43.6% said they mostly buy domestic meat, up 7.8 points from December.
