Phil Seng Answers Questions On USMEF BSE Campaign
USMEF President & CEO Philip Seng conducted a teleconference this morning with 40 representatives of Japan’s consumers and trade publications on the USMEF response over the last year to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis in Japan.
Until September 2001, Japan provided steady growth for U.S. beef exporters and sales exporters doubled in the 1990s. The discovery a year ago of the first BSE case in a Japanese animal sent shockwaves through the market as consumers turned away from all beef, domestic and imported.
Seng answered questions this morning on how USMEF responded to shore up consumer confidence, correct misinformation and initiate a campaign to highlight the safety of U.S. beef and the absence of BSE in the U.S. herd.
