Nationwide Retailer Now Selling U.S. Beef
Ito Yokado, the second-largest supermarket chain in Japan, started selling U.S. beef June 29 at 20 of its outlets in the Tokyo area. A sales promotion featuring U.S. beef samples and cooking demonstrations is helping market two featured cuts, U.S. beef chuck eye roll and chuck ribs.
USMEF is supporting the promotion with “We Care” materials to catch consumer attention and provide information on U.S. beef. USMEF foresees this move by Ito Yokado making a noticeable impact on consumers and other competing retail chains.
Ito Yokado operates more than 180 stores in Japan. Due to the company’s outreach and quality reputation, all major media outlets covered the kickoff of the U.S. beef promotion.
Having top retailers resume U.S. beef sales has been a priority for USMEF since many consumers trust these stores provide quality and safe products. When U.S. beef is on sale at these stores, consumers feel more confident in purchasing it.
According to the meat manager of the Omori store, consumer reaction has been positive and higher sales over the weekend are expected.
