July Imports Of U.S. Beef Increase 87 Percent Over July 2002

According to recent data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance (MOF), imports of U.S. beef for July totaled 28,037 metric tons (mt), an 87 percent increase over July 2002. Japan imported 156,096 mt of U.S. beef in the first seven months of 2003, an increase of 36 percent over Jan-July 2002 figures, according to MOF.

July was the last month prior to the imposition of the Japanese beef safeguard which raised the tariff rate on chilled beef imports from 38.5 percent to 50 percent on August 1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture releases U.S.export statistics for July later this week.
