July Imports Of U.S. Beef Increase 87 Percent Over July 2002

According to recent data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance (MOF), imports of U.S. beef for July totaled 28,037 metric tons (mt), an 87 percent increase over July 2002. Japan imported 156,096 mt of U.S. beef in the first seven months of 2003, an increase of 36 percent over Jan-July 2002 figures, according to MOF.

July was the last month prior to the imposition of the Japanese beef safeguard which raised the tariff rate on chilled beef imports from 38.5 percent to 50 percent on August 1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture releases U.S.export statistics for July later this week.

FSIS Holds Public Meeting Today On Reducing 
Pre-Slaughter Pathogens

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will hold a public meeting today (September 9) to discuss best management practices to help beef producers reduce E. coli 0157:H7 and other pathogens in cattle prior to slaughter. FSIS plans to discuss current pathogen intervention methods and promising new technologies that may aid beef producers reduce pathogen levels in pre-slaughter animals. Using comments received at today’s meeting, FSIS plans to publish a best practices recommendation for beef production facilities such as feedlots.

“The development of methods to reduce food safety hazards before slaughter is a critical component of the agency’s effort to improve the safety of U.S.meat, poultry and egg products,” said Dr. Elsa Murano, USDA undersecretary for food safety. “By developing best management practices, we can improve our ability to combat foodborne illnesses.”

Today’s meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Washington Plaza Hotel, 10 Thomas Circle, NW, Washington, DC 20005.
