Japan's Pork Imports Continue Rise In June
In June, Japan imported 59,179 metric tons (mt) of pork, 32.5 percent more than June 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. The U.S. provided 20,523 mt of the total, Canada, 12,974 mt and Denmark, 14,323 mt. Imports of U.S. product were 18.9 percent higher than June 2002, in anticipation of the imposition of the safeguard, though U.S. chilled pork imports were 19.6 percent lower at 9,532 mt. Japan's January pork inventory was 185,561 mt, 8.3 percent up from a year earlier.
U.S. Has Largest Beef Import Share In June
In June, Japan imported 44,477 metric tons (mt) of beef, 11.1 percent more than June 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. The U.S. led exporting nations with 21,281 mt of the total, followed by Australia with 20,960 mt. Imports of U.S. product were 16.4 percent higher than June 2002. In anticipation of the imposition of the safeguard on chilled beef, U.S. chilled beef imports were 54.0 percent higher at 10,179 mt. Japan's January beef inventory was 90,716 mt,33.2 percent down from a year earlier.
