Japan’s August Beef Imports Hit By Chilled Safeguard

In August, Japan imported 39,056 metric tons (mt) of beef, 26.3 percent less than in August 2002, as the safeguard was imposed on chilled beef imports, according to just-released Japanese government statistics. The U.S. had the highest market share with 19,119 mt, 18.1 percent less than August 2002. Imports of Australian beef fell 15.2 percent to 18,912 mt. Japan’s July beef inventory was 93,011 mt, 27.4 percent down from a year earlier.

Japan imported 37,876 metric tons (mt) of pork in August, 6.5 percent less than August 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. product — 14,380 mt — were 7.2 percent lower than August 2002. Japan’s July pork inventory was 216,685 mt, 18.8 percent up from a year earlier.
