Japan to Incinerate 37 Cows In BSE Preventive Action
Thirty-seven cows from a farm in Japan’s central Kanagawa Prefecture will be incinerated after the nation's fifth case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was detected there last month, the Associated Press and the Dow Jones news service reported today.
The regional government ordered the incineration because the animals were fed the same feed as the latest Japanese BSE case. Another 165 cows are being examined.
Japan, the only country outside of Europe to detect BSE, has had five cases since September 2001.
