Japan Imports 5.5 Percent Less Beef In April

With the U.S. still excluded from Japan’s import market, Japan’s beef imports registered another monthly decline in April. Japan imported 42,163 metric tons (mt) of beef, 5.5 percent less than in April 2003, according to just-released Japanese government statistics. There were no imports of U.S. beef due to the ban resulting from the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State in December. Imports of Australian beef were 71.7 percent higher at 38,072 mt. Beefimports from New Zealand totaled 3,892 mt, a 230.2 percent increase.

Russia Gives EU Until October 1 For New EU-Wide Export Certificate

The Russian Veterinary Service will allow individual European Union (EU) country export certificates until October 1, 2004, when a unified EU veterinary certificate will come into use. The June 5 announcement follows a week in which EU meat was prevented from entering Russia. The decree also allows the ten new EU members — Hungary, Cyprus, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — to export to Russia from EU-approved plants only, after they have been inspected by the Russian authorities prior to September 1.
