Food Safety Commission Needs More Time To Evaluate U.S. Beef Safeguard Measures

A Japanese Food Safety Commission panel announced Monday it has not decided whether Japan will lift its 20-month ban on U.S. beef. Panel members of the commission agreed they need more time to evaluate U.S. safeguard measures.

Panel chief Yasuhiro Yoshikawa gave no timetable for a final decision. Japan banned U.S. beef after the United States found its first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy on December 23, 2003. At that time Japan was the largest market for U.S. beef and beef variety meat, worth more than $1.4 billion.
