Distiller’s Dried Grains And U.S. Pork Quality Interest Traders
Just over a week ago, approximately 280 Japanese importers, distributors, manufacturers, retailers and foodservice representatives gathered at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo for a USMEF seminar on the outlook for U.S. pork in the global marketplace and how ethanol demand could affect livestock production in the future.
USMEF Manager, Research Analysis Erin Daley provided information on the U.S. pork and ethanol industries and Dr. Daniel B. Jones of Pioneer Hi-Bred International also was there to talk about U.S. hog feed innovation and the improvement of pork quality.
Dr. Jones showed that with the proper balance, the feeding of distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to hogs would have little impact on pork quality. DDGS are a co-product of ethanol production and can be used for feed as an alternative to offset the higher price of corn.
Most audience members had not seen this type of information before, and were very interested. They also were eager to hear about recent work in the United States on new corn hybrids that improve meat quality.
After the seminar, guests attended a reception, supported by the Nebraska Corn Board, which featured U.S. pork dishes recently developed by a famous chef and Japanese Diet member. They included: Tandoori pork spareribs, roast pork with soy sauce, butter sautéed pork with Japanese leeks, Korean-style pork fried rice and braised pork belly with black vinegar sauce. USMEF will feature these recipes during U.S. pork promotions this spring.
