Japan Continues To Import Greater Quantities Of Pork

Japan imported 65,715 metric tons (mt) of pork in September, 40.1 percent higher than in September 2004, according to Japanese government statistics, and imports of U.S. pork — 18,477 mt — were 9.4 percent more than in September 2004. The United States was the market leader, followed by Denmark with 17,401 mt.

Imports of Canadian pork totaled 16,606 mt a 40.3 percent decrease. Japan also imported 1,690 mt of pork from Mexico, an increase of 19.6 percent. The rate of increase for the July-Sept. 2005 quarter was not enough to trigger Japan’s pork safeguard.

Japanese Beef Imports Continue Decline In September

With the U.S. excluded from its import market for almost two years, Japan’s September beef imports were 4.4 percent lower than in September 2004. Japan imported 33,996 mt of beef in September according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of Australian beef were 4.5 percent lower at 30,447 mt. Imports from New Zealand fell 35.9 percent to 2,131 mt.
