Japanese Pork Imports Fall In July

Japan imported 93,678 mt of pork in July, 9.9 percent less than in July 2004, according to Japanese government statistics, and imports of U.S. pork — 24,250 mt — were 4.2 percent less than in July 2004. Denmark had the largest share of the import market — 33,413 mt, an 11.5 percent decline compared to the same month last year. Imports of Canadian pork totaled 16,666 mt a 5.7 percent decrease.

Japanese Beef Imports Continue To Climb

With the U.S. still excluded from its import market, Japan’s July beef imports were 30.8 percent higher than in July 2004. Japan imported 59,838 metric tons (mt) of beef in July according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of Australian beef were 26.6 percent higher at 52,064 mt. Imports from New Zealand climbed 35.4 percent to 6,107 mt.
