Japanese Beef Imports Higher Than Last January

Japan’s beef imports in January were 15.6 percent higher than January 2004. Japan imported 28,050 metric tons (mt) of beef in January, 25,392 mt from Australia, according to Japanese government statistics. There were no imports of U.S. beef due to the ban on U.S. beef resulting from the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State in December 2003. Imports of Australian beef were 35.3 percent higher than a year ago. Japanese imports of New Zealand beef climbed 20.8 percent to 2,321 mt.

Japan’s January Imports Were 15.9 Percent Higher

Japan imported 70,483 mt of pork in January, 15.9 percent more than in January 2004, according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. pork — 20,518 mt — were 12.7 percent higher than January 2004. Imports from Denmark totaled 24,371 mt and from Canada totaled 14,859 mt.
