Japanese Beef Imports Reverse Trend, Increase In August

With the U.S. still excluded from its import market, Japan’s beef imports ended   a long series of monthly declines and rose 4.4 percent in August compared to August 2003. Japan imported 40,762 metric tons (mt) of beef, 4.4 percent more than in August 2003, according to just-released Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. beef were zero due to the ban on U.S. beef resulting from the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State in December. Imports of Australian beef were 97.9 percent higher at 37,425 mt. All but 351 mt of the balance came from New Zealand (2,986 mt).

Japanese Imports 30.4 Percent More Pork In August

Japan imported 49,391 mt of pork in August, 30.4 percent more than in August 2003, according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. pork — 15,731 mt — were 9.4 percent higher than August 2003. Imports from Denmark — 11,925 mt — increased 53.8 percent but the United States had the largest market share. Increases in the previous quarter caused the Japanese pork safeguard to be imposed from August 1.
