Japanese Industry Group Calls On End To Ban

A federation of nine food industry associations called on the Japanese government to quickly end its import ban on U.S. beef today (Sept. 16). The federation’s head told a news conference that “We want the imports resumed as soon as possible.” The group, according to the Kyodo press agency, represents 2,335 food processors, distributors, restaurants and other food businesses as well as 409 unions.

A Japanese news organization (Nihon Keizai Shimbun) is reporting that the Japanese government decided on a proposal to submit to the U.S. government yesterday (Sept. 15), which includes new conditions for ending the ban on imports of U.S. beef including scientific proof of cattle age. President Bush is due to meet Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in New York next Tuesday, and the Japanese ban on U.S. beef may be one of the topics they discuss.
