Japan Beef Imports Down 26.9 Percent In July

With the U.S. still excluded from its import market, Japan’s beef imports registered another monthly decline in July. Japan imported 45,849 metric tons (mt) of beef, 26.9 percent less than in July 2003, according to just-released Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. beef were zero due to the ban on U.S. beef resulting from the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State in December. Imports of Australian beef were 29.1 percent higher at 41,135 mt. All but 205 mt of the balance came from New Zealand (4,509 mt).

Japanese Imports 13.4 Percent Less Pork In July

Japan imported 103,963 mt of pork in July, 13.4 percent more than in July 2003, according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. pork — 25,318 mt — were 30.1 percent lower than July 2003. Denmark had the largest share of the import market. Imports from Denmark — 37,745 mt — dropped 7.6 percent. Increases in the previous quarter caused the Japanese pork safeguard to be imposed from August 1.
