Japan Imports 19 Percent Less Beef In February

With the U.S. still excluded from Japan’s import market, Japan’s beef imports registered another monthly decline in February. Japan imported 36,970 metric tons (mt) of beef, 19.2 percent less than in February 2003, according to just-released Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. beef were negligible (36 mt) due to the ban on U.S. beef resulting from the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State in December. Imports of Australian beef were 55.7 percent higher at 34,033 mt.

Japanese Pork Imports Climb 29.4 Percent In February

Japan imported 62,404 mt of pork in February, 29.4 percent more than in February 2003, according to Japanese government statistics. Imports of U.S. pork — 20,363   mt — were 7.4 percent higher than February 2003, and the had the largest share of the import market. Imports from Denmark fell 5.5 percent to 19,560 mt.
