AgTC Provides Trucking Updates And Meeting Agenda
The Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) yesterday provided a trucking issues update and an updated agenda for its annual meeting taking place June 7. According to the AgTC, the current shortage of 20,000 truck drivers will increase to 100,000 within the next four years. Statistics show 70 percent of the North-American truck drivers are between 35 and 57 years of age. That, combined with long wait times for loading and unloading, endangers the supply chain.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted this week to delay a Bush administration plan to allow Mexican trucks full access to U.S. highways, by approving a three-year pilot program that would initially restrict opening the border to 100 carriers based in Mexico and allow up to 1,000 vehicles by the end of the pilot program. The Bush administration wanted to start a pilot program this year that would run for one year, before fully opening the border to Mexican trucks.
