Indonesia Requirements Change

Published: Jan 30, 2009

On Jan. 5, the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) revised its Export Library requirements for exporting beef to Indonesia. A list of approved beef facilities was removed, which is consistent with the USDA’s understanding that all USDA-approved establishments are eligible to export to Indonesia. USMEF understands, however, that Indonesian food safety authorities are still maintaining a list of approved U.S. facilities. The USDA and USMEF are currently seeking clarification from these authorities on the procedures U.S. exporters must follow in order to attain import eligibility and this information will be provided to USMEF members as soon as possible.

Plants wishing to export to Indonesia must obtain a halal certificate from an approved Islamic Center listed in the Export Library. USMEF and USDA are requesting that Indonesian authorities maintain and make available to the public a list of approved U.S. facilities, as well as a list of approved U.S. Islamic Centers. Until further information is known and published, exporters are advised to confirm with their importers the eligibility status of individual facilities and halal certifiers to prevent shipments from being detained or rejected.
