Traders And Consumers Show Strong Interest In U.S. Beef

USMEF celebrated the one-year anniversary of U.S. beef’s return to the Hong Kong market last month with a luncheon at Amber, one of the city’s most highly-regarded restaurants. Richard Ekkebus, an executive chef, prepared U.S. prime beef short ribs and beef cheek. Almost 20 meat traders who have been essential to the successful return of U.S. beef to the market attended to celebrate and to discuss U.S. beef opportunities and competitor strategies.

Traders and restaurant operators from Shanghai and North China showed interest in U.S. beef at the Shanghai Food Show last month. USMEF participated in the food show to provide information about U.S. beef, its safety and its uses in restaurant dishes. Although the United States is not exporting beef to China as of yet, interest from foodservice representatives was strong.

A strong interest in U.S. beef dishes at Skyfame, a rising restaurant chain in Hong Kong, was also evident last month as USMEF kicked off a two-month promotion featuring U.S. beef tenderloin, rib-eye and short ribs. The restaurant features Western, Portuguese and Asian cuisines and is fast becoming a popular dining location. The promotion concludes in mid February.
