FSIS Publishes COA for New EU Beef Quota

The Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) has posted the new EU Beef Quota Certificate of Authenticity (COA) in the EU requirements section of its online Export Library. The COA, currently in the form of an FSIS Letterhead Certificate, has been produced for the new zero duty quota for beef arising from the recent settlement between the EU and the U.S. of the long-running dispute on the use of hormones in beef production. This 20,000 metric ton (44.1 million pound) tariff rate quota for high quality beef at an in-quota tariff of zero is in addition to the existing 11,500 metric ton (25.4 million pound) tariff rate quota which carries an in-quota tariff of 20 percent.

The agreement was covered by USMEF in a July 31 Daily News bulletin.

Increasing Truck Weight Limits

The AgTC reports that a Maine truck weight amendment has been included in a bill to be voted on in the full U.S. Senate this fall.

Congress will vote on a bill containing a provision establishing a one-year pilot project in Maine that would allow trucks to haul up to their allowable weight threshold  (about 100,000 pounds on six axles, which is what is currently allowed on Maine state and county roads) on interstate highways. The current federal limit is 80,000 pounds.
