Higher Despite Safeguard
Although the Japanese pork safeguard was in force in the first quarter of 2002 (it was lifted for the April-June quarter), the demand for pork fueled by a drop in beef consumption could not be met by domestic producers and U.S. pork exports (including variety meats) to Japan were 2 percent higher in volume (67,485 metric tons (mt)) and 7 percent higher in value ($218.8 million) compared to the first quarter of 2001.
