Explaining the Benefits of MAP & FMD

Published: May 22, 2012
Studies regarding the USDA Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program have documented the effectiveness of these programs: a $35 return for every $1 invested, as well as supporting more than 8,400 jobs for every $1 billion in agricultural exports. But those benefits do not ensure the continuation of those programs.

While the Senate Agriculture Committee has passed its version of the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 which would extend current levels of funding for both the MAP and FMD programs for five years, there is much work to be done before continued full funding for these programs can be considered secure.

Attached is a letter regarding the MAP and FMD programs which outlines their importance and the benefits they provide in terms of job creation and contributions to the positive agricultural balance of trade. The letter can be personalized for use with legislators and local newspapers to help provide a broader understanding of MAP and FMD and the impact they have in exports, jobs and the profitability of all segments of the American red meat industry.
