Correction: EU Antibiotics Ban In Animal Feed Doesn't Apply To Imports
Although we stated in our earlier message that an EU-wide ban on the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed, which came into effect on January 1, 2006, applied to imports, this was incorrect. The ban does not apply to U.S. meat products exported to the EU.
In the final step in the phasing out of antibiotics use in livestock feeding for non-medicinal purposes, the EU now forbids the use of monensin sodium, salinomycin sodium, avilamycin and flavophospholipol for non-therapeutic uses but has not extended this ban to imports. These four compounds can still be used in the EU for therapeutic reasons.
