EU to raise Argentina beef quota in June
The European Union (EU) will this month approve a 10,000 metric tons (mt) increase in the quota for high-quality beef it imports from Argentina, Argentina’s Foreign Minister told reporters on Thursday. Argentina expects the 10,000 mt increase to be formalized on June 27 in Brussels.Argentina is South America’s No. 2 beef producer and the EU is its biggest market.
A foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak prevented Argentina from exporting all of its 28,000 Hilton Quota beef last year. The increase in the Hilton Quota will boost Argentina’s beef exports after they fell 50 percent last year.
In 2000, the last full year of beef exports, the European Union bought about $300 million worth of beef from Argentina, nearly half its overall beef exports.
