Check EU Residue Sampling Requirements Online

Members exporting to the European Union (EU) should check the online EU Residue Sampling requirements on the Food Safety And Inspection Service (FSIS) Web site. This year, the  EU eliminated testing requirements for antithyroid agents, steroids 19-nortestosterone, chloramphenicol and all beta-agonists except ractopamine in beef and stilbenes, antithyroid agents, steroids, resorcyclic acid lactones and chloramphenicol in pork.

U.S. Appeals Court Opinion Says Negligible BSE Risk From Canadian Beef

“Based on the low incidence of BSE in the Canadian herd, the numerous safeguards against BSE in this country, the lack of Canadian cattle under 30 months of age found with BSE and the lack of any case of vCJD attributable to Canadian beef,” a three-judge appeal court panel ruled, “any increased risk to human and animal health created by the final rule is negligible.”

The opinion released yesterday (July 25) by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said District Judge Richard Cebull erred in finding that Canadian cattle imports would cause “irreparable economic harm” to the U.S. livestock industry because of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The judges said they agreed with the USDA that Canada had taken strong measures to protect its herd against BSE and the evidence “belies the district court's prediction of catastrophic injury to the U.S. beef industry.”

The U.S. began allowing imports of Canadian cattle under 30 months of age on July 18.
